OUR STORY · FROM OUR FAMILY TO YOURS
One day, my elderly mother-in-law called me in tears. A man calling himself “Alan” had berated her over the phone, falsely claiming there was child pornography on her computer. He frightened her into revealing her bank account information.
Weeks later, another call. Alarming pop-ups had convinced her she needed to buy $75 worth of “antivirus” protection. She had rushed to her purse, past the hard candy and tissues, and reached for her card.
Then my own mother called. A big red warning on her screen claimed she owed tax money and threatened consequences unless she called the number it displayed.
Each time, I calmly explained what to do: hang up, don’t click anything, shut the computer off, and call me. Thankfully, neither of them lost money. But these were close calls—and within weeks, the same fear had led them back to the scammers.
When I asked why they had called again, their answers stayed with me:
“But I thought I was in trouble.”
“I just wanted to take care of it without bothering you.”
In a frightening moment, they had forgotten our conversation. They wanted to solve the problem themselves. What they needed was a reminder they could see right then, with a familiar name and number to call.
My brother-in-law Matt, my wife Melissa, and I talked it through. We wanted something affordable and easy to use: clear printed guidance and bold visual reminders, placed beside the phone or computer where those moments happen.
That is how the Senior Scam Protection Kit came to be. A practical way to help someone you love pause, remember the steps, and reach out before acting.
Because calling someone who cares is never a bother.
